Square knot
真結び ma musubi
The default furoshiki knot: tie 2 ends so the knot lies flat, holds firm and still unties in a moment.
- Cross B over the front of D, then take B down behind D and up through the gap.
- Pull both ends until the tie sits snug on the object.
- Bend D, now on the right, over the top to the left.
- Bring B up over D and tuck its tip down through the ring.
- Pull B and D apart until the ring closes into a knot.
- Check the knot lies flat, its ends left and right.
- Done: the finished square knot.
How to undo it
Hold one end and its own leg on the same side and pull them straight apart; the knot flips into a straight end with a loop round it. Slide that loop off the end.
Mistakes
- Crossing the same way twice makes a vertical knot (tate-musubi): the ends stand up and the knot loosens or jams.
- Corners too short to tie: start the wrap with the object closer to the centre.
