ショール(ボレロ・手首結び) shōru (borero, tekubi musubi)

Use a large or x-large furoshiki, at least 90 cm. Knot: Square knot, Single knot.

Shawl: Bolero With Wrist Knots, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a square, corner A at your near-left. Corners run clockwise: A near-left, B far-left, C far-right, D near-right. Use 90 cm (nishi-haba) or larger.
  2. Tie the far corners B and C together in a square knot. Lay it flat with the knot at the top; the far edge hangs in a slit down the middle. The knot will sit at the back of your neck. You should now see a knot at the top centre, a slit below it, and A and D at the bottom corners.
  3. Put the knot at the back of your neck and let the furoshiki fall over your shoulders. Corners A and D hang down beside your wrists.
  4. Tie corner A to the furoshiki beside it, around your forearm. Pinch the edge beside A into a point and tie the 2 in a square knot; keep the cuff loose enough to slide your hand out.
  5. Repeat step 4 with D on your other wrist. You should now see 2 loose sleeves, each closed with a knot at the wrist.
  6. Puff out the sleeves and smooth the back. You should now see a bolero with full sleeves gathered at your wrists.
