Mug Wrap

マグカップ包み magukappu tsutsumi

Use a small or medium furoshiki, at least 45 cm. Knot: Square knot, Tie once (half knot).

Mug Wrap, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, corner A pointing at you. B points right, C away from you, D left.
  2. Stand the mug in the centre, its handle pointing right.
  3. Fold corner D (left) and then corner B (right) in toward the mug along the slanted fold lines. Each fold line runs from near the mug down to the near edge. You should now see a narrower piece of fabric with A in front and C behind the mug.
  4. Bring corner A (near) around the front of the mug and corner C (far) around the back, passing both through the handle. Keep the furoshiki low, around the bottom half of the mug. A goes through the handle from the front and C from behind, so the 2 ends cross inside the handle. You should now see a band around the lower mug with both ends at the handle.
  5. Cross A over C beside the handle and tie once. Pull both ends so the band sits snug against the mug.
  6. Finish the square knot beside the handle. You should now see a band round the lower half of the mug with a small knot by the handle.
  7. Pull ends A and C apart so the knot sits flat beside the handle. Close-up of the finished knot: the 2 ends point sideways, not up. You should now see a small flat knot with 2 short ends lying along the band.
