ショール(袖結び) shōru (sode musubi)

Use a large or x-large furoshiki, at least 90 cm. Knot: Square knot.

Shawl: Knotted Sleeve Shrug, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a square, corner A at your near-left. Corners run clockwise: A near-left, B far-left, C far-right, D near-right. Use 90 cm (nishi-haba) or larger.
  2. Fold the far edge down onto the near edge. B now lies on A, and C on D.
  3. Tie the left corners A and B together in a square knot. Tie both layers at the tips; the left side now forms a loop for one arm.
  4. Repeat step 3 with the right corners C and D. You should now see a rectangle with a small knot at each lower corner and 2 loops.
  5. Turn the furoshiki over so the outside faces up. You should now see the outside of the furoshiki with the knots underneath.
  6. Put one arm through each loop and lift the furoshiki across your back. The knots sit at the back of your elbows.
  7. Pull the furoshiki up onto your shoulders and smooth the back. You should now see a cropped shrug with a knot at each elbow.
