Gift Wrap: Off-Center Side Knot

贈り物包み(リボン) okurimono tsutsumi (ribon)

Use a medium furoshiki, at least 68 cm. Knot: Square knot, Tie once (half knot).

Gift Wrap: Off-Center Side Knot, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, with A nearest you, B on the right, C at the far side and D on the left. Place the box near the edge between C and B. The 2 marks split that edge into equal halves. The dashed line runs from the midpoint straight in to the end of the box: line the box up with it, set in from the edge by about the box's height plus 3 cm.
  2. Roll the box over once toward you, toward corner A. Its first spot, by the edge between C and B, is shown dashed; it ends up a box-width nearer the middle, with furoshiki between it and that edge. D stays out on the left.
  3. Fold corner A (near) over the box.
  4. Roll the box over once away from you, wrapping A inside. You should now see the box wrapped in one layer, with D and B out to the sides.
  5. Fold corner D (left) over the top of the box toward the right.
  6. Lift corner B (right) up to meet D at the right-hand corner of the box, cross D over B and tie once.
  7. Finish the square knot at the corner of the box. You should now see a small flat knot on one corner of the box.
  8. Pull ends B and D so the knot sits snug on the box corner. Close-up of the finished side knot: a small knot on the corner with 2 short ends. You should now see a small, tight knot at the right-hand corner of the box.
