Scarf: Neckerchief Knot

スカーフ巻き(ネッカチーフ結び) sukāfu maki (nekkachīfu musubi)

Use a medium or large furoshiki, at least 68 cm. Knot: Square knot.

Scarf: Neckerchief Knot, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, corner A pointing at you. Use 68–70 cm (futa-haba) or larger.
  2. Fold corner A (near) up onto corner C (far) to make a triangle.
  3. Fold the point down to the long edge, then keep folding into a band. Each fold is about 5–8 cm; stop when the band is that wide. You should now see a long band with B at one end and D at the other.
  4. Drape the band around the back of your neck, ends B and D in front. Make both ends the same length.
  5. Tie the two ends in a small square knot at your throat. Tie once, then tie again crossing the other way; let the 2 ends hang down. You should now see a small flat knot at your throat with 2 short ends.
  6. Slide the knot to the centre and spread the ends. You should now see a neat neckerchief knot at the front of your neck.
  7. Let the 2 ends hang straight down from the knot. Close-up of the neckerchief knot at the front of the neck. You should now see a small flat knot centred at your throat with 2 short ends hanging down.
