Basic Wrap

お使い包み otsukai tsutsumi

Use a small, medium or large furoshiki, at least 45 cm. Knot: Square knot, Tie once (half knot).

Basic Wrap, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond and place the box in the centre. Corner A points at you; the box's long side faces you. Pick a box about 1/3 as wide as the corner-to-corner span.
  2. Fold corner C (far) over the box. Tuck any extra fabric under the near side of the box.
  3. Fold corner A (near) over the box, on top of C. You should now see the box covered, with corners B and D sticking out left and right.
  4. Lift corners B (right) and D (left) straight up above the box. Hold B and D straight up, one in each hand.
  5. Cross B over D and tie once on top of the box. Pull both ends snug against the box.
  6. Finish the square knot: lay the right end over the left and tie again. Pull both ends sideways, away from each other, to tighten. You should now see a flat knot with the ends pointing left and right.
