Shoulder Bag: Center Knot Basket

肩掛け袋(かご型) katakake bukuro (kago gata)

Use a large or x-large furoshiki, at least 100 cm. Knot: Square knot, Single knot, Twisted rope (handle twist).

Shoulder Bag: Center Knot Basket, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond. Corner A points at you; B is right, C is far, D is left.
  2. Fold corner A (near) in past the centre. Let its tip reach about 20 cm beyond the centre, enough to tie a square knot with C.
  3. Fold corner C (far) in over A so the 2 corners cross. You should now see 2 corners crossed in the centre, with B and D still flat at the sides.
  4. Tie A and C in a square knot at the centre. You should now see a flat knot in the middle of the furoshiki.
  5. Tie a single knot in corner B (right) where it leaves the bag. Pull B out sideways first so the knot sits tight against the side of the bag.
  6. Repeat step 5 with corner D (left). You should now see a deep bag with a knot at each side and 2 long corners sticking out.
  7. Twist corners B and D each into a rope. Twist each corner the same way, tightly, from the knot to the tip.
  8. Tie the tips of B and D in a square knot over the bag. You should now see a basket-shaped bag with one twisted arched handle.
