Shawl: Underarm Back Tie

ショール(脇下・背中結び) shōru (wakishita, senaka musubi)

Use a large or x-large furoshiki, at least 90 cm. Knot: Square knot.

Shawl: Underarm Back Tie, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, corner A pointing at you. Use 90 cm (nishi-haba) or larger.
  2. Fold corner C (far) down onto corner A (near) to make a triangle. You should now see a triangle, point toward you, with D and B at the ends of the long edge.
  3. Drape the triangle over your shoulders like a cape, point down your back. D and B come round to the front at your waist, one on each side, curling in toward the middle.
  4. Pass B and D under your arms to your back. Keep the folded edge around your shoulders. The dashed arrows show each end going in under the arm, out of sight, round to your back.
  5. Tie B and D in a square knot at the middle of your back. Tie once, then tie again crossing the other way. You should now see a flat knot in the middle of your back, the point of the cape above it.
  6. Smooth the shoulders so the front lies open and even. You should now see an open-front shrug covering your shoulders.
