Cushion Wrap

クッションカバー kusshon kabā

Use a large or x-large furoshiki, at least 90 cm. Knot: Square knot, Tie once (half knot), Single knot.

Cushion Wrap, finished
  1. Lay the large light furoshiki flat, inside up. This second, bigger furoshiki (about 90-105 cm) is the outer layer; it stays underneath for now, square to you. The dark furoshiki on top is about 70 cm.
  2. Lay the dark furoshiki inside up as a diamond on top. Corner A (near) points at you; B points right, C away, D left.
  3. Place the cushion in the centre of the dark furoshiki. You should now see the cushion on the dark diamond, with the light furoshiki showing around it.
  4. Lift corners A (near) and C (far) over the cushion and tie them in a square knot. Tie once and pull snug against the middle of the cushion, then tie again crossing the other way. You should now see a flat knot on top, with corners B and D pointing left and right.
  5. Turn the dark bundle over so the knot faces down, and centre it on the light furoshiki, laid as a diamond. Turn the light furoshiki so it lies as a diamond: E near, F right, G far and H left. Set the bundle on it with its points B and D facing F and H. You should now see the smooth dark underside on top, with no knot showing.
  6. Lift light corners E (near) and G (far) over the bundle and tie them in a square knot. E and G are the near and far corners of the light furoshiki. Tie once, then tie again crossing the other way. You should now see a flat knot on top, with a long pointed end on each side.
  7. Tie a single knot in each end: H with D on the left, F with B on the right. H and F are the light furoshiki's left and right corners; the dark corners D and B lie inside them. You should now see one knot on top and a knot at each end of the cushion.
  8. Pull each end knot tight against the cushion. Close-up of the right end: the light corner and the dark point are held in one single knot. You should now see a small, firm knot at each end with the loose tips standing out.
  9. Spread the knot ears so they sit neatly. The cushion is wrapped. You should now see one knot on top and a firm knot at each end of the cushion.
