Bird Wrap

鳥包み tori tsutsumi

Use a small or medium furoshiki, at least 45 cm. Knot: Square knot, Single knot.

Bird Wrap, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond and place the round object in the centre. Corner A points at you.
  2. Fold the tip of corner C (far) down toward the object. Fold down about a hand's width so C ends with a straight edge.
  3. Pleat corner C (far) into a narrow fan and stand it up behind the object. Make folds about 2 fingers wide, back and forth like a paper fan.
  4. Fold corners B (right) and D (left) under the object. Tuck each side corner under the object and pull snug so the object is held from below. Leave the tips long: they come back up in the next step. You should now see a pleated fan standing behind the object, with corner A pointing at you.
  5. Bring B and D up and tie them in a square knot around the base of the fan. Bring them up behind the object, cross them, tie once, then cross the other way and tie again. Tuck the ends under the knot. You should now see a teardrop shape with the fan bound on top and corner A at the point.
  6. Lay the bundle on its side with the fan tail up and to the right, then tie corner A (near) in a single knot to make the bird's head. Corner A now points to the left. Tie the knot close to the bundle and let the tip stick out as a beak. You should now see a bird with a fan tail on the right and a knotted head on the left.
