Hand Carry Bag: Knotted Corner Handles

手提げ袋(角結び持ち手) tesage bukuro (sumi musubi mochite)

Use a medium or large furoshiki, at least 70 cm. Knot: Square knot, Single knot.

Hand Carry Bag: Knotted Corner Handles, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond and place the items in the centre. Corner A points at you; B is right, C is far, D is left.
  2. Tie a single knot in corner A (near), about 15 cm from its tip. Close-up of corner A: tie the knot in the corner itself, leaving a 15-20 cm tip free beyond it to tie the handle later. You should now see a firm knot with a short tail beyond it.
  3. Repeat step 2 with corners B, C and D. Keep all 4 knots the same distance from the tips so the handles come out even. You should now see a knot near each of the 4 corners.
  4. Lift all 4 corners up around the items. The arrows show each corner rising; the knots act as stops later.
  5. Bring A together with B, and C together with D, to form 2 handles. Each handle is 2 neighbouring corners held side by side, knots facing out. You should now see a round bag with 2 handle loops above it.
  6. Tie the tips of A and B in a square knot on top of their handle.
  7. Repeat step 6 with C and D on the other handle. You should now see 2 handles, each closed by a flat knot on top.
