Scarf: Front Bow

スカーフ巻き(前蝶結び) sukāfu maki (mae chō musubi)

Use a medium or large furoshiki, at least 68 cm. Knot: Tie once (half knot), Bow.

Scarf: Front Bow, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, corner A pointing at you. Use 68–70 cm (futa-haba) or larger.
  2. Fold corner A (near) up onto corner C (far) to make a triangle.
  3. Fold the point down to the long edge, then keep folding into a band. Each fold is about 5-8 cm; stop when the band is that wide. The diagonal fold gives the longest band (about 96 cm on a 68 cm furoshiki), which you need for the bow. You should now see a long band with B at one end and D at the other.
  4. Drape the band around the back of your neck, ends B and D hanging in front. Make both ends the same length.
  5. Cross D over B at your throat and tie once. Pull it snug against your neck, but not tight. B now hangs from under the knot.
  6. Fold end B into a loop pointing sideways. Use the end that comes out from under the knot. Keep the loop short, about a hand's width.
  7. Wrap D around the loop and push it through to make a second loop. Push a fold of D, not its tip, through the gap behind the knot.
  8. Pull both loops to tighten the bow and even them out. You should now see a neat bow at your throat with 2 loops and 2 short ends.
  9. Straighten the bow so both loops point sideways and the ends hang down. Close-up of the bow at your throat. You should now see 2 even loops at your throat with 2 short ends hanging below.
