Emergency Hood

防災頭巾 bōsai zukin

Use a large furoshiki, at least 90 cm. Knot: Square knot.

Emergency Hood, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond and lay a folded towel on the near half, just short of the centre. Fold a hand towel (or a folded T-shirt) into a pad about 35 cm long and lay it across, from side to side. Corner A points at you.
  2. Fold corner A (near) over the towel, so its tip lies just past the centre. The towel is now wrapped in a pocket with a folded edge in front of it.
  3. Hold B and D, lift the furoshiki and lay it over your head, towel on top, folded edge at your forehead. Corner C hangs down your back and B and D hang beside your face. You should now see the padded part over the top of your head, with the front edge just above your eyebrows.
  4. Bring B and D down under your chin. Keep the folded edge snug across your forehead as you pull.
  5. Tie B and D in a square knot under your chin. Tie it firm but loose enough to fit 2 fingers between the knot and your throat. You should now see the hood framing your face, ears covered, with a flat knot under your chin.
  6. Tuck corner C inside your collar at the back. This keeps it from flapping or catching as you move. You should now see your face, eyes and mouth clear, with the hood snug and nothing loose at the back.
