Beret Hat

ベレー帽 berē bō

Use a small or medium furoshiki, at least 50 cm. Knot: Single knot.

Beret Hat, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, corner A pointing at you. Use about 50 cm (chū-haba) for an adult. B points right, C away from you and D left.
  2. Tie a single knot in corner A, about 12 cm from its tip. Gather the corner into a rope first. On a 50 cm furoshiki this leaves a short ear and a brim that fits an adult head.
  3. Repeat step 2a with corners B, C and D. You should now see a small knot at each of the 4 corners.
  4. Turn the furoshiki inside out so the 4 knots are hidden inside. Push the knots inward with your fingers, as the looping arrow shows.
  5. Shape the furoshiki into a rounded cap. You should now see a smooth round cap with no knots showing.
  6. Put the cap on your head and tilt it to one side like a beret. You should now see a soft beret sitting on your head.
