Bandana: Two-Tone Babushka

バンダナ(二色ほっかむり) bandana (nishoku hokkamuri)

Use a small or medium furoshiki, at least 54 cm. Knot: Bow.

Bandana: Two-Tone Babushka, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki flat as a square, light side up. Corner A is near-left, B far-left, C far-right, D near-right. A furoshiki with a darker reverse side makes the two-tone stripes show; any furoshiki ties the same way.
  2. Fold the left edge (A to B) over by a narrow strip. The dark reverse side now shows as a strip along the left edge.
  3. Fold the far edge toward you in 2 bands, dark side showing. Each band is about a quarter of the furoshiki; the second overlaps the first.
  4. Unfold the bands so the furoshiki is square again, a narrow dark strip on the left. You should now see a light square with a thin dark strip along the left edge.
  5. Fold the furoshiki in half diagonally into a triangle, point away from you. Line it up so the dark strips run down the middle from the point. You should now see a light triangle with 2 dark stripes running down from the point.
  6. Fold the long near edge up twice to make a hem band. Make the band about 3 cm wide; its two ends stick out at the sides.
  7. Lay the triangle over your head, hem band framing your face, and bring the 2 band ends down under your chin. The point, with its 2 dark stripes, hangs down your back.
  8. Tie the 2 band ends in a bow under your chin. Tie once, then make a loop in each end and tie the loops crossing the other way, like a shoelace bow. You should now see the scarf framing your face, with a small bow under your chin.
