Scarf: Necktie Drop

スカーフ巻き(ネクタイ結び) sukāfu maki (nekutai musubi)

Use a medium or large furoshiki, at least 68 cm. Knot: Tie once (half knot).

Scarf: Necktie Drop, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, corner A pointing at you. Use 68–70 cm (futa-haba) or larger.
  2. Fold corner A (near) up onto corner C (far) to make a triangle.
  3. Fold the point (A and C) down to the long edge.
  4. Fold the new top edge down to the long edge again. Each fold is about 5 cm.
  5. Keep folding the same way until you have a band about 5 cm (3 fingers) wide, D at the left end and B at the right. You should now see a long flat band with D at the left end and B at the right.
  6. Drape the band around the back of your neck, ends B and D in front.
  7. Wrap B over and around D, then pull B straight down. Keep the wrap loose so there is a loop at the front.
  8. Pass D through the front loop and pull it down. Pull gently until the knot is narrow.
  9. Slide the knot up to your throat and let both ends hang straight. You should now see a narrow knot at your throat and 2 ends hanging straight down like a tie.
  10. Straighten the 2 ends so they hang flat, one over the other. Close-up of the knot: narrow and snug at the throat, like a tie knot. You should now see a narrow knot with 2 straight ends hanging below it.
