Napkin Fold: Pleated Glass Fan

ナプキン折り(扇) napukin ori (ōgi)

Use a small furoshiki, at least 35 cm.

Napkin Fold: Pleated Glass Fan, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond, corner A pointing at you.
  2. Fold corner A (near) up to just below corner C (far). Leave C peeking out a finger's width above A, so both tips show. You should now see a triangle with the long folded edge nearest you.
  3. Fold the long near edge up to the front, making a band about 1/3 of the height. Fold toward you, over the triangle, and keep the band straight; corners B and D stay at its two ends.
  4. Fold the napkin back and forth into narrow pleats, from left to right. Make about 7-8 pleats, each about 3 cm wide, and keep the band at the bottom. Leave the 2 band ends flat.
  5. Squeeze the pleats together and stand the napkin in the glass with the band just inside the rim. Do not push it to the bottom: only the band end goes into the mouth of the glass, the pleated points stay above it, and the 2 flat band ends stay outside. Before you set it in, you should see a fan of upright pleats with the band across the bottom and a flat band end at each side.
  6. Fan out the points and turn the band ends B and D out over the rim. You should now see a fan of pleats above the rim, the band sitting in the mouth of the glass, and a band end hanging over each side.
