Gift Wrap: Basic Square Knot

贈り物包み(真結び) okurimono tsutsumi (ma musubi)

Use a small or medium furoshiki, at least 45 cm. Knot: Square knot, Tie once (half knot).

Gift Wrap: Basic Square Knot, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond and place the box in the centre. Corner A points at you; the box's long side faces you.
  2. Fold corner A (near) over the box, then fold corner C (far) over on top of it.
  3. Lift corners B (right) and D (left) up over the top of the box. Hold one in each hand. You should now see the box covered by A and C, with B and D in your hands.
  4. Cross B over D and tie once on top of the box. Pull both ends snug against the box. You should now see one tie on top with 2 ends standing up.
  5. Finish the square knot: lay the right end over the left and tie again. You should now see a flat knot with 2 ears on top.
  6. Pull ends B and D to tighten the knot against the box. Close-up of the finished knot: a firm wrap in the middle with the 2 ends rising out of it. You should now see a tight knot sitting on the centre of the box, with no gap underneath.
