Condolence Wrap

左包み(弔) hidari tsutsumi

Use a small furoshiki, at least 45 cm.

Condolence Wrap, finished
  1. Lay the furoshiki inside up as a diamond and place the envelope a little right of the centre. Lay it front up with its top away from you; corner A points at you. For a funeral or memorial use this wrap; the Celebration Wrap folds the mirror way.
  2. Fold corner B (right) over the envelope. Fold along the envelope's right edge. Where the tip runs past the other edge, fold it back under itself.
  3. Fold corner A (near) up over the envelope. Fold along the envelope's bottom edge and fold back any tip that runs past the far edge.
  4. Fold corner C (far) down over the envelope, on top of A. Fold along the envelope's top edge and tuck back any tip, as before. You should now see a neat band the size of the envelope, with corner D still lying flat on the left.
  5. Fold corner D (left) over to the right, on top of all the others. Fold along the envelope's left edge. The end of D now sticks out past the right edge.
  6. Wrap the end of D round the right edge and under the packet. Fold in any part that pokes out at the edges, so every edge is neat. You should now see a flat packet with the left side on top, closed left over right.
  7. Smooth the packet flat. Carry it like this, without a knot. Hand it over the same way you would a fukusa: open it, take out the envelope and turn it so the name faces the recipient. You should now see a flat packet the size of the envelope, with the left side on top and no knot.
