Horizontal stripes

Horizontal stripes give a bold, open look; no special symbolism.

Edo period (stripes generally)

Stripes spread from imported 'island' fabric in the 15th–16th centuries and became popular with Edo townspeople. Vertical stripes dominated fashionable dress; horizontal stripes were less common on kimono and are more typical of obi, children's wear and banded (dan) patterns. There is no specific tradition attached.
