Bamboo fence

The crossed bamboo poles of a rough temporary fence; a rustic fence motif suggesting protection.

Vernacular architecture; date of use as a pattern unknown

Yarai, or take-yarai, is a rough bamboo fence of diagonal slats crossed over horizontal rails, forming a diamond lattice; such fences were put up to keep people out, for example at execution grounds or around temporary sites. The crossed lattice was adapted as a simple textile and tenugui pattern alongside other fence motifs (higaki, take-gaki).
