House crest

屋形文 yakata-mon

House crest

A small shrine house with crossed ridge beams (chigi), repeated in rows. The house-shape crest (yakata-mon) is the crest of Ise Shrine's Inner Shrine (Naikū).

Recorded by 1675 as the crest of Ise's Inner Shrine

Yakata-mon is a crest or pattern showing a house or shrine building with crossed chigi ridge beams. The essay Enpekiken-ki (1675) states that the crest of the Inner Shrine (Naikū) at Ise is the yakata. Repeated in rows, it becomes an all-over pattern; mathematicians cite it as a Japanese example of the pm wallpaper symmetry.
