Spiral

Whirlpool spirals evoke water and energy, related to the tomoe swirl believed to protect against fire and evil.

Jōmon period (prehistoric)

Spirals are among the oldest decorations in Japan. Early Jōmon pottery in eastern Japan bears spirals and concentric circles, and in the Middle Jōmon bold raised coils cover whole pots. Related spiral forms continued in Chinese-derived meanders and in the comma-shaped tomoe used on roof tiles against fire and on shrine and family crests.

The spiral naruto fishcake and the Naruto whirlpools keep the image familiar.
