Interlaced roundels of two birds

鳥襷 toridasuki

Interlaced roundels of two birds

A Heian court (yūsoku) pattern of paired long-tailed birds set in interlaced roundels; formal and auspicious, good for couples and celebrations.

Heian court (yūsoku) pattern; tasuki lattices since the Nara period

Crossed-diagonal (tasuki) lattices were woven in twill and brocade from the Nara period and were favoured at the Heian court as a calm, stable design. Toridasuki fills the lattice with roundels of eight stylised birds around a flower-diamond (hanabishi). As a yūsoku pattern it was reserved for court robes and imperial furnishings, which is why it still reads as formal and auspicious.

Used today on formal obi, court-style costumes and celebration items.
