Waves

Waves

Stylised waves show the sea's power and calm. Waves follow one after another, so they also wish that good things keep coming.

Prehistoric to Edo; many named styles

Wave patterns run through Japanese design from ancient times: the overlapping seigaiha arcs of court dance costume, the plover-over-waves of Heian poetry imagery, swirling Kanze-mizu named after the Kanze school of noh, and the bold rising waves (tatenami) on samurai and festival gear. In the Edo period pictorial waves flourished on kosode, culminating in ukiyo-e images such as Hokusai's Great Wave.
