Girls

Figurative motif of young women, as in ukiyo-e beauties or folk-doll styles; decorative rather than symbolic.

Edo-period ukiyo-e bijin-ga; folk dolls

Pictures of young women (bijin-ga, 'pictures of beauties') were a main genre of ukiyo-e from the 17th to 19th centuries, with masters such as Suzuki Harunobu and Kitagawa Utamaro, and continued into Meiji and modern prints. Fashionable girls in furisode, and folk-doll styles such as kokeshi, carry this image into decorative textiles. It is figurative rather than symbolic.
