Trefoil

三つ葉 mitsuba

Trefoil

A three-leaf motif. As a crest, the related katabami (wood sorrel) stands for family prosperity because it spreads so vigorously.

Heraldic; katabami crest mentioned c. 1000

Three-leaf crests are mainly based on katabami (wood sorrel). The Pillow Book, around 1000, already names 'hollyhock and wood sorrel' as crests, and katabami became one of the most widespread family crests, with many variants (ken-katabami with sword blades, yotsu-katabami and others). Its vigorous spreading growth was read as a wish for family prosperity.
