Basket weave

The mesh of a woven bamboo basket forms six-pointed stars, long believed to ward off evil spirits; a protective, everyday pattern.

Bamboo basketry; long used as an amulet

Kagome is the hexagonal open weave of bamboo baskets, whose holes form six-pointed stars. Because the mesh looks like many 'eyes', it was believed to repel evil, and it appears in shrine and temple latticework, family crests and charms; baskets were hung at doorways for protection in some regions. It is related to the children's song 'Kagome kagome'.

The term kagome lattice is now also used in physics and mathematics for this tiling.
