Diamond well-frame

菱井桁 hishi igeta

Diamond well-frame

A well-curb # (igeta) skewed into a diamond. Igeta evokes a well, so clean water and purity.

Igeta crest recorded from the mid-15th century (Muromachi period)

Igeta, the wooden curb around a well seen from above, is first recorded as a crest in the mid-15th-century Nagakura tsuibatsu-ki, used by the Mizoguchi family. In the Edo period it was famous as the crest of the Ii daimyō of Hikone. The diamond-skewed hishi-igeta is one of several crest variants, and igeta was also one of the most common kasuri (ikat) patterns on everyday cotton.

A form of igeta is still the emblem of the Sumitomo group.
