Mountain-path zigzag

平山道 hira yamamichi

Mountain-path zigzag

Zigzag 'mountain path' lines (yamamichi), a simple traditional stripe and sashiko pattern; hira- probably means a shallow, low zigzag.

Sashiko and stripe tradition; date unknown

Yamamichi ('mountain path') zigzags are a stock sashiko and stencil pattern. Sashiko began in the Edo period to strengthen and warm cotton garments and became decorative folk work in northern Japan by the Meiji period. The hira- variant appears to name a flatter zigzag; no separate history was found.
