Fishing net

網目 amime

Fishing net

Linked net meshes, a fisherman's motif for scooping up good fortune and a big catch; cool-looking, so popular in summer.

Edo-period townsmen's pattern (word attested from c. 900)

The word amime ('net mesh') appears in Japanese texts from around 900. As a textile pattern the fishing net belongs to Edo-period townsmen's taste, printed on yukata and tenugui and on fishermen's festival wear, where it carried the wish to 'scoop up' good fortune and a big catch. Its airy look made it a summer favourite, often paired with fish or plovers.
