Snowman

雪だるま yukidaruma

Snowman

A snowman in the shape of a daruma doll; a playful winter motif carrying some of daruma's good-luck meaning.

Edo period, Japan (named after the daruma doll)

The Japanese snowman is shaped and named after the daruma doll, usually in two balls rather than three. Children making snow daruma appear in Edo-period woodblock prints, including one by Hiroshige, and on netsuke of about 1831–70, so it was already a familiar winter game.

A playful winter motif for children's goods and seasonal wrapping.
