Snow rabbit

Snow rabbit

A small rabbit shaped from snow, with leaves for ears and red berries for eyes; a charming winter motif for children.

Edo period, Japan (attested in 18th-century prints)

Small snow hares with nandina leaves for ears and red berries for eyes were made mainly by women and children. They appear in Edo prints: a snow rabbit on a tray at a snow-viewing party (Utagawa Toyoharu, 1772–74), one held up outside a teahouse (Hokusai, 1798–99), and a giant one built by children (Kuniteru, c. 1840). They were set on trays by the house or brought indoors for tea gatherings and snow viewing.

Still made after snowfalls and used as a winter motif on sweets and textiles.
