Moon
月 tsuki

The full or crescent moon, long admired in poetry; it evokes autumn moon viewing (tsukimi) and is often paired with rabbits or pampas grass.
Heian-period court moon viewing, adopted from the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival
Heian aristocrats, influenced by the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, gathered to write poems under the full moon of the 15th night of the 8th lunar month, sometimes from boats to see its reflection. A second viewing on the 13th night of the 9th month became a Japanese custom. Later, ordinary people decorated with pampas grass and offered rice dumplings for a good harvest.
Tsukimi is still kept in September or October with dango and susuki; the moon is an autumn motif, often with rabbits.
