Girls

Figurative motif of young women, as in ukiyo-e beauties or folk-doll styles; decorative rather than symbolic.

Bijinga (pictures of beautiful women), from Nara-period paintings to Edo ukiyo-e

Pictures of women go back to the 8th-century Shōsōin screens, but the genre flourished in Edo ukiyo-e. Moronobu drew standing courtesans in the 17th century; Sukenobu and Harunobu widened subjects to townswomen and daughters in the mid-18th; Kiyonaga and Utamaro defined the late-18th-century golden age. Uemura Shōen and Itō Shinsui carried it into the 20th century. Folk dolls and kokeshi offer a parallel rustic image of girls.

A decorative, retro motif on modern tenugui and furoshiki.
