Clover

Clover

Clover has no traditional Japanese symbolism. Here it is the Western lucky-clover motif (the native name is shirotsumekusa 白詰草).

White clover introduced to Japan in 1846 (late Edo); lucky-clover meaning is Western

White clover is native to Europe and reached Japan at the end of the Edo period. Its name shirotsumekusa, 'white packing grass', comes from dried clover found packed around glassware presented by the Dutch. The four-leaf clover as a luck symbol is a modern Western import with no older Japanese tradition.

Used as a cute, modern motif on furoshiki and children's goods.
