Rising steam

Pairs of undulating vertical lines swell and pinch like rising steam, a classic court pattern used here as a full layout. It reads as gentle waves on any wrap.

Heian-period court (yūsoku) pattern

Tatewaku, 'rising steam', is one of the yūsoku patterns worn by the Heian court nobility, derived from wavy vine scrolls of the Nara period. Early examples had leafy vines between the wavy lines; from the Kamakura period the lines became plain and clouds or flowers were set between them. It stands for growth and rising fortune and is used on formal and wedding wear.
