Four corners

四隅取り yosumi-dori

Four corners

Each corner carries its own colour or pattern, leaving a four-pointed star in the middle. In flat and hidden-knot wraps you turn the furoshiki to bring a different corner forward for the season or mood, and a cross-tied wrap shows a different colour on each knot end.

Four-corner decoration; Edo-period tsutsugaki furoshiki

Placing a motif in each of the four corners suits a square furoshiki that is folded corner-in. In the Izumo region of Shimane, indigo tsutsugaki furoshiki given as part of a bride's trousseau since the Edo period carry a family crest in the centre and auspicious motifs such as crane and tortoise, pine-bamboo-plum or treasures in the four corners. Yosumi-dori develops that idea, giving each corner its own colour.
