Pine-bark diamond corner

One corner of the furoshiki fills with a stepped, jagged diamond shape (matsukawabishi). When wrapped the stepped edge climbs over the top of the parcel.

Momoyama period (1573–1615) textiles

Matsukawabishi, the stepped lozenge said to resemble flaking pine bark, was especially fashionable in the Momoyama period, when it was used to divide colour areas on tsujigahana-dyed kosode and in Noh costume; it also appears on roof ridges and lattice work. The furoshiki layout fills one corner with this stepped shape, a direct borrowing of that kosode technique of blocking colour with a matsukawabishi outline.
