Outward glare

四方にらみ shihō-nirami

Outward glare

The design radiates from the centre towards all four corners. Whichever way the furoshiki is turned, the pattern faces outwards, so it works for any wrap.

Furoshiki trade term

Shihō-nirami, 'glaring in four directions', describes a design that faces outward to every edge, so it looks right whichever way the furoshiki is turned. The name borrows a phrase used of guardian figures and of dragon paintings on temple ceilings whose eyes seem to follow the viewer from any side. It suits gift furoshiki because the giver need not orient it.
