Crest furoshiki; Muromachi to Edo, wedding trousseau
Marking a furoshiki with a family crest goes back to the story behind the name furoshiki: guests at the Muromachi shogun's bath wrapped their clothes in wrappers bearing their crests. Dyed crest furoshiki later became part of a bride's trousseau, along with name furoshiki ordered from kimono shops. Sumitsuke puts the crest or name in one quarter, so that in a flat wrap it shows on top of the parcel and identifies the giver's family.
Crest and name furoshiki are still ordered for weddings, funerals and formal gifts.
