Fan

A fan-shaped panel holds the main motif against a plainer field. Place the fan where it will land on top of the wrap.

Heian-period painted fans; Momoyama–Edo screens

Fan-shaped panels (senmen) come from the Heian court habit of painting fans with scenes such as The Tale of Genji and holding fan-painting contests. In the 17th–18th centuries painted fans were mounted on folding screens, and fan shapes became a favourite framing device on kosode, lacquer and ceramics. The fan, opening outward, is read as a sign of growing prosperity, making it a popular gift motif.
