Curved corner

曲線取り kyokusen-dori

Curved corner

Like the diagonal split, but one corner area is cut off by a sweeping curve. Wrapped, the curve shows as an arc across the parcel with the coloured corner as the knot end.

Modern furoshiki trade term

Kyokusen-dori is a variation of the diagonal split in which the dividing line sweeps in a curve. Curved dividing lines were used in kosode design, for example the undulating lines that mark off decorated areas in katasuso (shoulder-and-hem) kosode of the Muromachi to early Edo periods. As a named furoshiki layout it comes from makers' composition charts.
