Circle

丸取り maru-dori

Circle

One large circle (or circle-shaped pattern) sits in the centre. Wrapping something tall makes the circle's edge rise up the sides; in a shopping-bag wrap the motif lands on the base.

Central crest layouts; Edo-period tsutsugaki

A single large roundel in the middle follows the form of crest furoshiki: Izumo tsutsugaki wedding furoshiki, for example, place the family crest in the centre. A circle is also a lucky shape (maru, 'round', suggests harmony and completeness), so maru-dori is used for gift furoshiki where the round design should rise up the sides of the wrapped box.
