Vertical knot (mistake)

縦結び tate musubi

Shown only as the mistake to avoid: a granny knot whose ends stand up at a right angle to the object.

1. Look at the ends after the second tie.
2. Undo the second tie: pull B back up out of it and over to the left.
3. Bend D, now on the right, over the top to the left.
4. Bring B up over D and tuck its tip down through the ring.
5. Pull B and D left and right to tighten.
6. Done: a flat square knot on top of the box, its ends pointing left and right.

How to undo it

Pull the upper end back out of the second tie, keeping the first tie, then retie the second half crossing the other way.

Mistakes

• Crossing right over left both times (or left over right both times).
