月 tsuki

The full or crescent moon, long admired in poetry; it evokes autumn moon viewing (tsukimi) and is often paired with rabbits or pampas grass.

Heian period moon viewing, from China

Moon viewing came to Japan in the Heian period with elements of China's Mid-Autumn Festival; aristocrats composed poetry under the harvest moon, sometimes from boats. The moon god Tsukuyomi appears in the Kojiki, and the 10th-century Tale of the Bamboo Cutter ends with Kaguya returning to the moon. In the Edo period townspeople made offerings of dango, taro and pampas grass, and the moon with susuki is the August card in hanafuda.

Tsukimi is still kept in autumn with dango and susuki.
