Bursting fireworks capture the summer festival; a playful yukata and summer-gift motif.

Edo period; Ryōgoku fireworks from 1733

Fireworks reached Japan with firearms in the 16th century. The first public display, at Ryōgoku on the Sumida River in 1733, opened the summer boating season and was meant to console the spirits of those lost to famine and epidemic. Watching for free became the essence of an Edo summer, and fireworks appeared in ukiyo-e and on summer clothing. Japanese shells are prized for their round 'chrysanthemum' bursts.

Fireworks festivals and yukata go together; the motif is a summer favourite on yukata, uchiwa and tenugui.
