Linked balance weights (fundō, used to weigh gold and silver) symbolise wealth and stability; one of the 'treasures' motifs, good for business gifts.

Edo period

Fundō were the waisted weights used on balance scales for gold and silver, and gold and silver were also cast in fundō shape as bullion reserves. The weight joined the takara-zukushi ('assembled treasures') set of lucky motifs, and linked into a repeating chain it became a waritsuke (all-over grid) pattern found on 19th-century Ise katagami stencils.

Used on tenugui and merchant goods as a wish for prosperity.
