Scatter layout

散らし chirashi

Scatter layout

A layout rather than a motif: flowers, fans, crests or other motifs scattered freely across the furoshiki, as in chiri-bana (scattered petals), giving a light, free feel.

Layout term; scattered designs common on Edo-period kosode

Chirashi simply means motifs 'scattered' (tobitobi ni chirasu) across a ground, also called chirashi-gata. The arrangement runs through Japanese design, from scattered crests and petals on kosode to fan and poem-card scatters (ōgi-chirashi, shikishi-chirashi) on screens and lacquer. The late Edo fukiyose ('wind-gathered') style is one variety.
